Local Food System
A FOOD SYSTEM is everything that is involved in bringing the food to your plate. This includes the farming, processing, distribution, selling, and the preparing. Our global food system has created a system that is out of our control. Who knows where their food comes from? Is it safe to eat? Or are the processes used to raise this food destructive to our environment?
A LOCAL FOOD SYSTEM is the same food chain brought to a local level. The food is grown and raised close to you and you are familiar with the farms that produce it. The processors are in your city and employing people from your community. The distribution of this food takes far less fuel and has a significant smaller carbon footprint than the global food distribution system. The preparation of this food is found mainly in small family-owned restaurants and is sold at local food coops, farmers markets, road side stands, and local grocery stores. The money generated by this whole system stays in our community and moves the community forward, becoming more sustainable.
